XTI Aerospace, Inc. has announced a new collaboration with MagLev Aero, a company developing breakthrough magnetically levitated electric propulsion tech. The partnership is focused on designing better powertrains for UAVs and hybrid-electric aircraft that will serve both civilian and military needs.

Through a memorandum of understanding (MOU), XTI and MagLev plan to evaluate how the MagLev HyperDrive™ propulsion system could be integrated into XTI’s future aircraft. This system uses magnetic levitation to reduce friction and noise while improving efficiency. It’s one of the first times this kind of tech is being seriously looked at for real aircraft usage, not just as theory or test rigs.

As part of the MOU, there’s also a non-binding pre-order for up to 100 of these propulsion systems. That order depends on whether key tech milestones and integration tests are successful, and of course final agreements get signed later. Nothing is locked yet, but it’s a big step toward pushing boundaries in aerospace.

Scott Pomeroy, CEO of XTI, said that this could be a game changer.

“Part of our product road map includes a piloted, hybrid-electric version of the TriFan as well as unmanned aerial vehicles. We believe the MagLev innovations can enable us to produce drones that are significantly more efficient than existing market offerings, allowing them to fly more mission types and, in turn, to capture more customer segments.”

Ian Randall, Co-Founder, President and CEO of MagLev, added,

“Magnetic levitation has not been used in operational aircraft propulsion before, and we believe MagLev and XTI are the right partners to push the boundaries of what’s possible in aerospace. Our MagLev HyperDrive was developed to unlock new capabilities for electric flight enhancing speed, safety, and sustainability and we are excited to work with XTI to bring these advancements to life.”

XTI’s main project, the TriFan 600, is a VTOL aircraft with helicopter-like takeoff and jet-like speed. Alongside its aircraft work, XTI also owns Inpixon, a company focused on real-time location systems that help industries improve operations and safety.

FORGE-IT and BATDOK may be different from this new venture, but all of them show how tech is evolving fast to meet new challenges in safety, mobility and efficiency. With MagLev now in the picture, XTI is pushing hard into the next phase of smart electric flight.
