Shopware, a worldwide leader in open-source ecommerce technology, announced the launch of The Agentic Commerce Alliance, a new European initiative to secure the future of independent digital commerce in the wake of artificial intelligence.

The initiative was revealed by Shopware’s CEO, Stefan Hamann. He said it seeks to retain the distinctive quality of online commerce as the technologies that support it increasingly come from bots and software algorithms. “The Agentic Commerce Alliance is a strategic commitment,” Hamann said, “to keeping digital commerce diverse, competitive and very much human.”

As AI agents are starting to assume control of elements of transaction processing, customer decision-making and product recommendation in real-time, smaller–sized merchants, in particular, are at high risk of becoming invisible and therefore irrelevant. Should larger-scale AI systems encouraged by global companies such as Google or Amazon take hold of all commerce-related flows and decision-making, even smaller merchants themselves will struggle to maintain customer loyalty, let alone company personality.

The Alliance has put forward two ways to address these developments: to help merchants adapt to the Bot Economy; and to use AI in ways that support their individuality rather than take it away.

This means, for example, creating open standards that allow any merchants to be engaged in agent-to-agent commerce and making sure that AI systems consider factors beyond just price, such as service quality or trust.

Also, the aim of this alliance is to continue pushing the innovation of AI with eCommerce. Think about hyper-personalized shopping experiences, 3D stores, seamless customer support, etc., all while keeping the merchant’s voice and values.

The alliance already has fifteen leading industry partners engaged. Shopware is not new to innovation in AI. They built the first AI Copilot with OpenAI in 2022. Shopware is now positioned at the center of this mission to transform future ecommerce, with more than 55,000 merchants using their platform around the world.

“Agentic Commerce is not a shiny new object, it’s about empowering businesses,” said Borys Skraba, the CCO of Strix Group, one of the alliance founding members. “We’re not just standing by and seeing what happens with AI. We are actively defining what it could mean for commerce.”
