Salesforce Urges UK Government for Tailored AI Regulations
London, UK—The UK chief executive of Salesforce, a leading enterprise software company, is calling on the UK government to implement specific and targeted AI regulations – it’s important that policymakers don’t amalgamate all technology companies developing AI systems under the same umbrella.
Speaking to CNBC in London, Zahra Bahrololoumi, CEO of UK and Ireland at Salesforce, said the American enterprise software colossus takes all legislation “seriously.” However, she added that any British proposals aimed at regulating AI should be “proportional and tailored.”
Bahrololoumi noted that there are substantial differences between companies that develop consumer-facing AI tools and those that focus on enterprise AI systems.
Enterprise-grade products face more restrictions compared to consumer-facing AI like ChatGPT or Gemini. Adherence to higher privacy standards and corporate guidelines is more in enterprise-grade products than consumer-facing AI.
A spokesperson from the UK’s Department of Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) said
“Planned AI rules would be highly targeted to the handful of companies developing the most powerful AI models rather than applying blanket rules on the use of AI”.
This indicates that the rules might not apply to companies like Salesforce, which don’t make their own foundational models like OpenAI.
Salesforce has been vigorously promoting its Agentforce AI technology platform, an upgraded version of Einstein Copilot. It allows businesses to create their own AI “agents” for tasks like sales, service, and marketing. The platform emphasizes ethical and safety considerations, including a “zero retention” feature that prevents customer data from being stored outside of Salesforce.
Even after Salesforce acknowleding that enterprise AI providers have more established compliance measures, Bola Rotibi, chief of enterprise research at CCS Insight, noted that regulations around consent, privacy, and data sovereignty apply to all levels of AI, regardless of whether they are consumer or enterprise-focused.
