OpenAI Introduces European Data Residency for Enhanced Compliance
San Francisco, California, February 07, 2023 — OpenAI has revealed the launch of data residency for its API Platform, ChatGPT Enterprise, and ChatGPT Edu services in Europe.
This makes it possible for European companies to access OpenAI’s technologies and develop new AI products while complying with local data sovereignty regulations.
This covers users’ ChatGPT and custom GPTs conversations in their Enterprise or Edu workspaces including user’s prompts, uploaded files, and text, vision and image content across different modalities.
The company uses AES-256 encryption for data at rest, and TLS 1.2 plus for data in transit to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of data during storage and transmission across networks. OpenAI’s models do not by default train on data from ChatGPT business plans or API accounts, unless the customer indicates that they wish to share data for that purpose.
OpenAI’s measures for data protection comply with GDPR, CCPA and other relevant privacy laws by satisfying the CSA STAR and SOC 2 Type 2 standards.
The company also provides a detailed Data Processing Addendum (DPA) that helps delineate roles and obligations under GDPR and other privacy laws, thus supporting the compliance needs of organizations.
This move helps strengthen data control for organizations working in Europe, further building on OpenAI’s comprehensive data privacy, security, and compliance features.
