Nokia and Cellcard Enhance Cambodia’s Fiber Broadband Network
PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA, 13th February 2025 – The partnership between Nokia and CAMGSM PLC, doing business as Cellcard, was announced with the goal of upgrading Cambodia’s residential fiber broadband network from GPON to XGS-PON technology. Through Nokia’s OLTs and other cutting-edge devices in keeping with its Altiplano Integrated Network Control and Management suite, the upgrade seeks to deliver multi-gigabit internet speeds to homes and businesses across the country.
Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, and other important cities will be the sites of deployment. To analyze, automate, and optimize its broadband access services, Cellcard will be able to use Nokia’s Altiplano Access Controller, a cloud-native system that integrates full-fledged network management and SDN features. In order to meet the increasing need for greater capacity, the Lightspan access nodes will offer a network that is future-proof and able to transition to 25G PON.
Asitha De Costa, ICT Division Chief Information Officer at Cellcard, emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering a superior network experience, stating, “We are dedicated to delivering a best-in-class network experience to our customers, especially as data consumption continues to rise and individuals rely more on digital infrastructure for their professional and personal activities.”
“We are delighted to collaborate with Nokia for the first time in our fiber networks domain to enhance the residential broadband experience of our subscribers. The new network will enable our users to enjoy high-bandwidth-consuming applications like gaming while enhancing network efficiency through automation.”
Ajay Sharma, Head of South-East Asia North Sales, Network Infrastructure at Nokia, said, “We remain committed to helping service providers across the world transition to XGS-PON and automation to better support the growing demand for 10Gb/s services and need for improved network utilization and operational efficiencies.”
“Our field-proven Lightspan and Altiplano solutions will help Cellcard modernize its fiber broadband network and enable them to reduce its power expenditure and lower its carbon emissions. This significant project reinforces our longstanding partnership with Cellcard.”
Better broadband services and innovative new applications like Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), which demand high speed and low latency, will be made possible by Cellcard’s network modernization. The goal of switching to Nokia’s XGS-PON solution is to improve end-user experience even more, gain a competitive advantage, and boost the fiber network’s scalability, flexibility, and dependability to satisfy changing consumer needs.
