Microsoft to Launch 1st Malaysian Cloud Region with Three Data Centers by Mid-2025
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 20th March 2025 – Microsoft has revealed that it has begun the construction of three data centers which will mark the beginning of its first cloud region in Malaysia, with operations set to go live in Q2 2025.
The Malaysia West cloud is what these facilities will be called, and they are expected to be located within the Greater Kuala Lumpur area. This forms part of the $2.2 billion dollars Microsoft pledged about a year ago to improve the country’s cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.
Laurence Si, Managing Director of Microsoft Malaysia, reassured that the project is still on track even with the possible issues revolving around semiconductor chip export control.
“At this point, everything is status quo for us. We do have a good relationship with all the various stakeholders. Everything that we intend to invest and go live with in our region, that continues to stay on track,” Si said.
Over the next four years, the initiative is estimated to deliver over 10.9 billion dollars and create over 37,000 new job openings in Malaysia. These figures match with the nation’s aspirations of emerging as a leader for cloud and AI development in Southeast Asia. These data centers will create a paradigm shift in not only the economic landscape, but the strategic significance of Malaysia as well.
AI is changing the world as we know it. If fully realized, the potential AI will bring can be accomplished with the development of properly connected data centers in Malaysia.
These data centers enable progress in various fields, including healthcare, finance, and education. At the same time, Malaysia’s rise as a key player in the semiconductor industry also showcases the willingness of the country to engage in AI-powered projects.
Global tech companies have already invested heavily due to the abundance of land, power, and water, along with the proximity of Singapore’s underwater internet cables.
With Microsoft planning on building their new cloud region in Malaysia, it’s a sign that the country possesses the needed infrastructure. This puts Malaysia on track for the digital transformation it so desperately needs. The importance of cloud data centers will only grow as the world moves deeper into AI.
