IBM has launched Watsonx AI Labs, a new innovation center now in the Manhattan area. This lab is more or less an experimental center, featuring innovative AI experimentation aimed at addressing business challenges, connecting IBM’s global resources to the developers, startups, and enterprise leaders of the future.

Watsonx AI Labs is located within IBM’s One Madison office and is part of IBM’s global footprint. The lab will include engineers, researchers, and AI enthusiasts who intend to create advanced agent-based AI solutions. The vision of Watsonx is what really sets it apart. This is not just an experimental lab; it’s a collaborative space aimed at addressing real-world challenges.

This initiative is going to help establish NYC as a growing international capital for AI. The city is home to an expanding group of more than 2,000 AI startups and the pool of AI talent is growing quickly. Since 2019, over 1,000 AI companies in NYC have raised greater than $27 billion. IBM is tapping into this momentum.

Watsonx AI Labs also builds on local partnerships. IBM has entered into a partnership with Seek AI, a startup from New York City that integrates autonomous AI agents to help enterprises use their own corporate data to make decisions. These products and practices become the building blocks for the lab, combining startup speed with IBM’s depth of knowledge in enterprise.

According to IBM’s Data & AI General Manager, Ritika Gunnar, this lab isn’t a typical corporate lab. This lab is a creative space for premier AI talent to build, test, and scale new applications to change/break the way enterprises use AI. And the lab is supported by IBM Ventures, which has a $500 million fund focused solely on AI startups.

The lab won’t just work with mainstream participants. The lab is meant to support early-stage companies by given them access to IBM’s technical experts, mentorship, and funding. In addition to early-stage companies working in the lab, they will also work with local universities and research institutions, which come together to blend research and development environments with an academic perspective.

Sarah Nagy, CEO of Seek AI  emphasizes on this as she says, “We’re excited to take on these challenges in New York City, where Seek AI was founded, and where the AI talent and innovation ecosystem is thriving.”
