Chicago, USA, 26th March 2025 – CME Group, the world’s premier marketplace for derivatives, has joined forces with Google Cloud to investigate asset tokenization using Google Cloud’s Universal Ledger. This initiative aims to improve the efficiency of capital markets by streamlining the processes of settlement, clearing, and operational risk mitigation.

With this collaboration, Google Cloud and CME Group plan to incorporate a blockchain based tokenization technology that enables almost instantaneous transactional gratifications. As assets are tokenized, intermediaries are eliminated, which increases transparency and fundamentally change the approach of financial institutions towards collateral, margin, and settlement payments.

This project will be directly piloted with market participants later this year, with commercial services expected in 2026.

“Towards the shift to round-the-clock trading, collateral, margin, settlement, and fee payments can be significantly automated and efficiencized by Google Cloud’s Universal Ledger,” explains CME Group Chairman and CEO Terry Duffy.

Bear in mind that asset tokenization is the assignment of property rights to a digital token on a blockchain network.

This significantly increases the swiftness, security, and efficiency of financial transactions. The leading financial institutions are adopting this methodology as the entire industry moves towards decentralized processing in real time.

CME Group’s plans are aims to develop a robust, scalable, and secure asset tokenization framework with the help of Google Cloud’s distributed computing and AI powered analytics expertise.

“While collaborating with CME Group to create with GCUL illustrates this commitment, it also shows how Google Cloud aids partners in transforming their businesses by using modern infrastructure and strategic relationships,”

Said Rohit Bhat, General Manager, Financial Services at Google Cloud.

This is a testimony toward the acknowledgement and acceptance of digital assets and blockchain technology in the financial industry. As markets change, digitization through tokenization can lead to the use of digitalized financial products that are more liquid, less expensive in terms of counterparty risk, and proficient in terms of operations.

Google Cloud and CME Group’s partnership is a notable milestone in the advancement of the infrastructure for financial markets.
