SAN JOSE, CA, 4TH, APRIL, 2025  – Cisco’s 2025 Data Privacy Benchmark Study clearly uncovers the complexity that is engulfing data governance in the AI-governed world. Businesses successfully walk the boundaries between local data use and global provider trust and AI governance, among other issues.

“Privacy and proper data governance are foundational to Responsible AI,”

Said Dev Stahlkopf, Cisco Chief Legal Officer.

“For organizations working toward AI readiness, privacy investments establish essential groundwork, helping to accelerate effective AI governance.”

The study, conducted in twelve countries and incorporating 2,600 privacy and security professionals, signals a swell of reliance on global providers for data protection, indicating that 91% of organizations trust global providers over local solutions.

At the same time, 90% see local storage as inherently safer and underline the continuing tensions around data privacy strategies.

“The drive for data localization reflects rising interest in data sovereignty,”

Said Harvey Jang, Cisco’s Chief Privacy Officer.

“Yet, a thriving, global digital economy relies on trusted cross-border data flows. Interoperable frameworks such as the Global Cross-Border Privacy Rules Forum will play a vital role in enabling growth while effectively addressing crucial privacy and security concerns.”

Though there are challenges, growth went from 80% last year to 86% this year in organizations that believe that laws surrounding privacy are a boon, as compliance is a business advantage. 96% prove that investments in privacy yield revenues greater than their costs.

The importance of AI adoption is reshaping the battle lines for companies. Sixty-three percent of respondents may be very familiar with GenAI, but, interestingly, data leak fears linger since 64% genuinely fear the inadvertent sharing of sensitive data. Almost 50% admit inputting personal or proprietary data into GenAI tools.

Lost in numbers, 99% of the companies stand ready to realign their privacy budget toward the AI governance scheme, representing a landmark shift in priority investment. Cisco’s AI Defense tools are used to curb the reflections of AI’s danger, ensuring compliance and security.

Now that AI governance is a priority, organizations should use privacy strategies to develop new knowledge with which to grow sustainably into the customer confidence of being more AI-driven-world.
